TAIWAN carrier Yang Ming Marine Transport has announced its plan to equip five 15,000-TEU newbuild ships for dual-fuel LNG power, reports Ventura, California's gCaptain.
Yang Ming said LNG fuel offers a "mature" low-carbon alternative that can reduce the vessels' greenhouse gas emissions by 20 per cent compared to conventional fuel and help the company meet environmental and regulatory benchmarks.
"They include IMO's Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) for annual decrease in emission intensity, and the Fit for 55 package, being part of the European Commission's Green Deal, to reduce EU's total GHG emissions by up to 75 per cent by 2050, and the recommendation of applying a well-to-wake approach in GHG accounting of maritime transport.
