| THERE were four newcomers breaking into the list of ports with an annual throughput of 100 million tonnes in China in 2009, bringing the total to 20, Xinhua reported. The four new ports were Jiangyin, Xiamen, Zhanjiang and Huzhou. The number of China's 100 million tonne ports has always been growing. It reached 12 in 2006, 14 in 2007 and hit 16 by then end of 2008. Among the four ports, Jiangyin and Huzhou are river ports. A Shanghai government official said river transport is one of the focuses of the Ministry of Transportation. Beijing plans to enhance the traffic on tributaries to the Yangtze, the Xijiang river and Beijing-Hangzhou Canal this year and give better support to the development of Wuhan and Chongqing as shipping hubs. The official said China's container throughput would reach 125 million TEU this year, as the country's trade gradually recovers, an increase of two per cent over 2009. Throughput tonnage is estimated to grow about 13 per cent year on year to 7.8 billion tonnes. |
