| MEMPHIS International Airport, the home FedEx, handled 3.69 million tons in 2009, up 0.04 per cent from 2008, according to airport authorities - thus retaining the title as the world's busiest cargo airport for the 18th year in a row. Rival Hong Kong International Airport came in second place after handling 3.35 million tons of air cargo, a decrease of 7.7 per cent compared to the previous year, reports Bloomberg News. Shanghai Pudong Airport's flat year-on-year performance in cargo volume put still put it in third place, according to the mainland news service Logistics Week. "Towards the end of the year, we definitely saw some sequential growth taking place, and things are on an upwards slope," said Robert Dahl, a consultant at Air Cargo Management in Seattle. "The US market has also done better than Asia in recent months, so that's helping FedEx and Memphis." The report noted that in December FedEx announced that cargo volume handled by its express unit fell by one per cent for the first fiscal quarter, the best result in five quarters. According to Mr Dahl, FedEx attracted some additional air freight volume when Deutsche Post AG's DHL unit scrapped its US domestic operations in late 2008 and early 2009. "Air Cargo Management estimates DHL's US volume was split about equally between FedEx and United Parcel Service Inc," the report said. |
