| An absence of charters in the capesize sector failed to drag its index down¿for now. But conversely a very strong short-term period rate for a supramax also failed to lighten that sector's index mood. France's Louis Dreyfus bought into the panamax spot market in a big way as it led a charge on roundtrips from the Far East to South America. Capesizes Winning only had to find a paltry $17,000 a day for a roundtrip from China to Indonesia with the 145,900-dwt Golden Huaxi (built 1985). Panamaxes Dreyfus took two units for trips from the Far East to South America and back. The 75,400-dwt Avax (built 2006) cost $26,000 and the 76,300-dwt Maritime Harmony (built 2008) $25,250. The French charterer also has the 73,700-dwt Maritime Putian (built 2000) for a roundtrip in the North Pacific from and to China at $23,000. Cargill is also going from China to South America and back to the Far East, spending $23,000 daily on the 71,500-dwt Peter S (built 1995). The grain giant also splashed out a huge $33,500 a day plus a bonus of nearly $700,000 for the 76,800-dwt Betis (built 2006) to head from Brazil to the Far East. A roundtrip in Asia-Pacific set one charterer back $24,000 a day with the 76,600-dwt Kerveros (built 2003) while BHP has the 73,300-dwt Barbara (built 1997) from Japan to Australia and China at $23,000. In the period market Vitol spent $25,750 a day on three to five months with the 71,400-dwt C Iris (built 1996). Supramaxes STX Pan Ocean has splashed out a huge $35,000 daily for about five months with the 56,000-dwt Effy N (built 2009). In the voyage market Cargill has the 50,200-dwt Pretty Lady (built 2001) from Brazil to Southeast Asia at $31,750 a day plus $560,000 on top. IVS spent $22,000 daily taking the 45,800-dwt Chrysoula S (built 1996) from South Africa to the Med. |
