| Norway's Havyard Group has won its first contract from a Chinese shipowner for one of its offshore vessel designs. Sinopec Corp has specified a Havyard 843 CD design for an anchor handler it is having built at an unnamed yard in China. Havyard already has four of its designs building in China for foreign shipowners, but this is its first for a domestic owner. The ship, due for delivery in the second quarter of 2012, will be operated by Sinopec subsidiary Shanghai Offshore Oil Bureau. Havyard will deliver basic design, detail engineering and support to the owner and shipyard during the vessel's construction. Principal particulars include a length of 81 metres, a beam of 19.5 metres and a depth to main deck of 8.5 metres. The vessel will have a speed of 17 knots, a bollard pull of 200 tonnes and be fitted with accommodation for 34 people. Havyard says the vessel will be equipped with a new concept for the anchor handling winch arrangement to ensure a safer and more efficient operation. The concept replaces the traditional waterfall winch drum configuration with a side by side configuration. Havyard says this gives lower centre of gravity and better stability in anchor handling operations. "We see this contract as a door opener to a new, exiting market in China," said Ole Zahl, senior vice president for Havyard's Global Sales Network. "The oil companies in China are focusing on increasing the exploration and production from the Chinese offshore sector and the activity is moving to deeper water with a tougher, more challenging environment." |
