Western Bulk Carriers delved into smaller tonnage with a large spot rates for a trip from the US to the Far East and a short-term deal with a handymax.

After gaining so much ground over the past week or so capesizes fell back on the index on a lack of activity although SK Shipping kept rates afloat in the Atlantic.

Capesizes

That deal was for a roundtrip from the Med to South America with Anglo-Eastern's 197,200-dwt Athenian Phoenix (built 2009), the deal now surfacing having been penned last week.

Panamaxes

Norden has the 76,500-dwt Sea of Future (built 2005) for a roundtrip from the Far East to Australia at a strong $40,000 a day as the panamax index rose 40 points.

Rates slipped between the Far East and South America as Noble booked a roundtrip with the Japanese-owned 74,300-dwt Goldbeam Trader (built 2001) at $31,500 per day.

A voyage from India to South America and on to China set Oldendorff back $34,750 daily with Roth Reederi's 72,900-dwt Monte Pelmo (built 2000).

The 69,900-dwt Fen Jin Hai (built 1995) was fixed for a roundtrip from China to Indonesia at $27,500 a day.

At just $500 a day shy of this the 68,900-dwt Sea Pride (built 1983) will head from the Persian Gulf to South America and back.

Supramaxes

Western Bulk Carriers spent $23,000 a day for between four and six months with the 45,400-dwt Efi Theo (built 1997) from China later this month.

The Norwegian also spent a massive $43,000 a day on the 55,400-dwt Tai Honesty (built 2007) from the US to the Far East with reportedly no ballast bonus.

Another European has the 52,400-dwt Bulk Saturn (built 2003) from Japan for three or four months at $25,500.

And STX Pan Ocean spent $24,000 a day booking the 53,700-dwt Lorentzos (built 2005) from China to South America and back to the Far East.
