Russia Launches Massive Drone and Missile Strikes Across Ukraine, Hitting Odesa and Kharkiv

Russia launches large-scale overnight barrage

Russia launched a major wave of drone and missile strikes across Ukraine overnight Sunday, August 9, with the Odesa region bearing the brunt of the attack and additional strikes reported in Kharkiv and other areas, Ukrainian officials said.

The assault came as fighting between Russia and Ukraine continued to intensify despite ongoing diplomatic efforts to end the war. Ukrainian authorities reported extensive damage to civilian and port infrastructure, while Russia said its forces had targeted Ukrainian military-related facilities. Reuters

The attacks demonstrated the continuing ability of Russian forces to launch large, coordinated aerial assaults involving different types of missiles and drones.

Odesa hit by drones and missiles

Odesa, a major Black Sea port and one of Ukraine’s most important agricultural-export hubs, was among the principal targets.

Ukrainian officials said the region was struck by a large number of attack drones and missiles. The barrage damaged port infrastructure and other facilities, while at least 12 people were reported injured in the wider Odesa area. Ukraine’s Energy Ministry also reported power disruptions affecting residents in the city. Reuters

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy accused Russia of deliberately targeting Odesa’s port infrastructure and warned that attacks on the country’s agricultural export facilities could have consequences beyond Ukraine.

Odesa is strategically important because it serves as a key gateway for Ukrainian agricultural exports through the Black Sea. Damage to its infrastructure could therefore affect the movement of grain and other commodities.

Kharkiv apartment building struck

Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, was also hit during the Russian assault.

Ukrainian authorities said a Russian strike on an apartment building killed three people and wounded 37 others. Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene as rescuers searched damaged structures and treated the injured. Reuters

The attack added to the city’s already extensive record of damage during Russia’s war against Ukraine. Kharkiv, located relatively close to the Russian border, has repeatedly been targeted by missiles, drones and other weapons.

Ukrainian officials have repeatedly warned that the city remains particularly vulnerable because of its geographic proximity to Russia.

Air defenses under growing pressure

Ukraine has increasingly warned that its air-defense capabilities are being stretched by the scale and frequency of Russian attacks.

Recent Russian barrages have combined large numbers of drones with ballistic and cruise missiles, forcing Ukrainian forces to use expensive interceptors against incoming threats.

In a separate attack on August 8, the Ukrainian Air Force said it intercepted 135 of 151 drones launched overnight, but six ballistic missiles could not be stopped. President Zelenskyy has repeatedly appealed for additional air-defense systems and Patriot interceptors. Reuters

The latest barrage comes only days after Russia launched a major attack on Kyiv and surrounding areas. That August 5 assault killed at least 17 people, according to Ukrainian officials, and involved dozens of ballistic missiles. Reuters

Russia says it targeted military facilities

Moscow has consistently denied deliberately targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said its forces had struck Ukrainian military-related targets, including fuel storage and facilities associated with drones, according to reports carried by the Associated Press. AP News

Ukraine has repeatedly disputed Russian descriptions of its targets, saying strikes have hit residential buildings, energy facilities, ports and other civilian infrastructure.

The competing accounts could not be independently verified in every location.

Attacks exchanged across the border

The Russian barrage occurred alongside a major Ukrainian drone campaign against targets inside Russia.

Russian authorities said Ukrainian drone attacks killed six people in Belgorod on August 9. The regional authorities initially reported three deaths before the toll increased after emergency workers searched damaged buildings. Reuters

Russia’s Defense Ministry said more than 150 Ukrainian drones had been intercepted or destroyed across several Russian regions, including areas around the Black Sea and Sea of Azov.

Ukraine has increasingly used long-range drones to strike Russian energy infrastructure, military facilities and logistics networks, seeking to disrupt Moscow’s ability to sustain its war effort.

The simultaneous attacks underline the escalating nature of the conflict, with both sides increasingly targeting infrastructure far from the front line.

North Korean military support adds to concerns

The latest attacks also come amid reports of deepening military cooperation between Russia and North Korea.

Ukraine’s military intelligence said a North Korean missile unit had been deployed to Russia’s Voronezh region and could be equipped with as many as 120 ballistic missiles and six launchers. Kyiv has also warned that North Korean personnel and weapons are increasingly supporting Russia’s war effort. Reuters

Russia and North Korea have significantly strengthened their military relationship since signing a strategic partnership treaty in 2024. Moscow has not publicly confirmed all of Ukraine’s latest claims regarding the missile deployment.

Diplomatic efforts face renewed pressure

The latest Russian strikes come at a difficult moment for diplomatic efforts to end the war.

President Donald Trump has continued to push for an end to the conflict, while President Zelenskyy has repeatedly said Ukraine is prepared for negotiations provided its security interests are protected.

At the same time, the continued exchange of large-scale missile and drone attacks is increasing the humanitarian and infrastructure costs of the war.

The attacks on Odesa and Kharkiv demonstrate that even as diplomatic discussions continue, Ukraine’s major cities and strategic infrastructure remain under significant threat.

For Ukraine, the immediate priority is strengthening air defenses and protecting critical infrastructure. For Russia, the continued use of large aerial barrages demonstrates its effort to maintain pressure on Ukrainian cities, logistics and energy networks.

With both sides continuing long-range attacks, the latest barrage provides little indication that the intensity of the conflict is easing.
